Clean Aviation Forum in Brussels – The future of flight

Als dagvoorzitter en interviewer verdiept Mark zich in de achtergronden van de onderwerpen die op events en bijeenkomsten besproken worden. Hier deelt hij updates en inzichten uit het vak.

I had the privilege of moderating the Clean Aviation Forum at Egmont Palace in Brussels, an event at the heart of Europe’s push for sustainable flight.

The Work Behind the Scenes

With four complex panel discussions on the agenda, I knew that ‘scratching the surface’ wouldn’t cut it. To truly facilitate a conversation between studied engineers and industry leaders, I spent the weeks leading up to the forum buried in technical research.

My goal was to be able to speak the language of the experts on stage to allow us to have a much more candid and impactful dialogue. (article continues below)

Key Takeaways from the Stage

Across discussions on hybrid-electric propulsion, hydrogen-powered aircraft, and the policy strategies needed to support them, three themes stood out:

  • The Technology is Ready: We are moving past the “if” and into the “how.” For hybrid-electric and hydrogen flight, the focus has shifted from pure research to the rigorous engineering required for real-world scaling.
  • The Power of the Ecosystem: Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. To move from a successful lab test to full commercialization, we must better utilize the entire European industrial ecosystem. We have the talent; now we need the integration.
  • A Long-Term Runway: Aviation operates on decades, not fiscal quarters. Europe needs to strategically invest with 2050 and even 2100 in mind, providing the regulatory stability that breakthrough technologies need to thrive.

Looking Ahead

The roadmap to 2050 is a massive undertaking, but after seeing the expertise and passion in Brussels last week, that this ‘long runway’ looks increasingly clear. I’m looking forward to seeing what this industry achieves next.
